By the 17th century, Tantallon Castle’s military importance diminished with advances in warfare and political changes. The castle was partially destroyed during the mid-1600s by Oliver Cromwell’s forces during the Wars of the Three Kingdoms.

Following this, Tantallon was abandoned and left to fall into ruin.
